The (Faux) Fur is Flying

Very exciting news --- I finally received my silvery faux fur shipment this past week. It is stunning. It is so soft I spent time just petting it. As a result of this new-found love, I had to set aside the Trench Dress temporarily so I could work with this gorgeous stuff!

I chose a simple coat pattern from Burda's October 2008 issue. It has straight lines, a high collar, raglan sleeves and reaches the knees. I think the simple style will really showcase the beauty of the fabric.

I traced the pattern, made minor alterations, and steeled myself for cutting. I've read about the need for careful cutting --- but did I take that to heart? No, of course not. In my excitement to move forward, I rationalized that my faux pile was on the short side so I could just cut out the pieces per usual --- rather than cutting out the patterns in a single layer and just cutting into the backing fabric to minimize cutting the actual fur hairs. Bad move. Needless to say, I have many, many tufts of faux fur all over my dining room/cutting area. Even my cat is staying away. Lesson learned --- careful cutting will help minimize the flying fur!

  1. I cut my Tissavel fur last week with the vacuum hose close by! It was in my nose! I can't wait to see your coat!

  3. Great pattern choice for your fur. I was looking though my old Burda magazines recently and noticed they have featured patterns for faux furs for years. I can't believe I hadn't noticed til now.
Even with careful cutting, I had fur everywhere.
