Overrun With Plums
The plums on our tree are rapidly ripening -- and I can't keep up! Every time I go outside, there are plums that have already fallen to the ground. I harvest as best I can, but the plums are plentiful -- I feel like they have the upper hand. One of them almost hit my head!
While the tree is beautiful (and fruitful), I'm at a loss as to what to do with all of these plums. Other than turning into the "plum lady" doling out bags of plums to friends and family, I would appreciate any ideas!

Plum sauce for the freezer!

We made plum jam one year and it was wonderful. Just removed the stones/pits and cooked them down a bit, then ran the cooked pulp through a food mill to remove the skins (as you might when making applesauce). Then we proceeded with jam-making.

Oh you're so lucky! My plum tree this year is practically barren :( I think I pruned it too heavily, too late.

And bags of plums left anonymously on neighbors' porches late at night ;-)

Plum cafloute. Preserved plums. Plum jam. Plum chutney (my grandmother would chutney anything!). Chicken or duck with plum sauce. Plum salsa. Plum icecream (puree any excess fruit and add to good quality vanilla icecream and re-freeze). Plum sorbet (drop the plums in boiling water and remove quickly. remove skins. slice and put in food processor, push through a sieve, put on stove top and boil gently with one cup caster sugar and a good slug of gin. Allow mixture to thicken slightly. Freeze for six hours, stir then refreeze. See you can never have too many plums!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha i have the same problem with my lemon tree... what i suggest is that you pick as many as you can, and the ones that fell already, leave them there. They are terific for the tree, they are great fertelizers and your plum tree will really enjoy them. It might even make your fruites sweeter and better. Our lemmon tree smells so good people think we spray it with perfume..
