Thank you all for your great ideas for my Hawaiian print fabric! From your comments, I think a tunic or a dress with the shells arranged along the hemline would work well. No home dec!
For those who are interested, I saw this article in the NY Times about the resurgence of interest in sewing manufacturing in the US. Given some of the recent factory disasters in places like Bangladesh, there has been a growing focus on US-manufactured sewn products. However, it seems that there aren't enough people with the required sewing skills to fill the jobs -- all of the outsourcing of sewing-related jobs since the '90s have taken a toll on the industry. To address this need, independent training programs are being developed and some companies desperate for skilled workers are committing to providing training programs as well. It will be interesting to see if the trend toward "locally produced" goods continues to gain traction and can, ultimately, lead to a renewed sewing industry here in the US.
